Choose PPE based on the task and the risk of exposure, following your facility's infection prevention and control policy. Perform hand hygiene before putting PPE on and after taking it off, remove gloves and gowns carefully to avoid contaminating your hands, and dispose of single-use PPE after each patient or task.

P2/N95 respirators only protect properly when they seal to the face — do a fit check each time you put one on. Respirators with an exhalation valve protect the wearer but don't filter the air breathed out, so they aren't suitable where you also need to protect patients or a sterile field.

PPE FAQs

What is the difference between a surgical mask and a P2/N95 respirator?

A surgical mask is a loose-fitting barrier against splashes and droplets. A P2/N95 respirator filters airborne particles and is designed to seal to the face, so it is used where airborne transmission is a risk.
